Transvaginal Mesh Questions and Answers

What is transvaginal mesh?

It’s a medical device for women.

What is “mesh”?

It’s essentially a net or a set of fibers.

What does “transvaginal” mean?

Basically, it means across or through the vagina.

So a transvaginal mesh is really just a net across or through the vagina?

Basically, yes.

Why would someone need a transvaginal mesh?

It is supposed to treat pelvic organ prolapse (“POP”) or stress urinary incontinence (“SUI”).

How is it supposed to help?

The mesh (net) is designed to support the organs that have fallen from their normal places (POP) or to support the organs that are pushing against the bladder (SUI).

What’s wrong with that?

The challenge is with the complications women can endure with the transvaginal mesh.

What are some of the complications—and how severe can they be?

The complications range in severity.  On the one hand, some complications of transvaginal mesh can include minor discomfort and occasional, small bleeding.

What major complications can transvaginal mesh involve?

The signature injuries of transvaginal mesh include: significant pain, infection, bleeding, erosion, painful intercourse, organ perforation, and urinary incontinence.  Some women even have multiple surgeries as a result of their complications.

Is that why there are lawsuits against the makers of transvaginal mesh?

Precisely.

So if I bring a suit, do I have to sue my doctor?

Not at all.

Why not?

Because your doctor (like most doctors) very likely did NOT know about the potential complications until much later.

So who should come in to talk about their transvaginal mesh problem?

Anyone who (a) has had a transvaginal mesh installed and (b) suffered some kind of related problems, especially those with major complications.

What do I need to pursue my claim?

We’ll work with you on obtaining medical and/or diagnosis records down the road—but you do NOT need that information to start the process.

How long will my case take?

These kinds of cases are extremely complicated and can easily take months to work through, or years to get to trial.
